Property represents 'over half of UK's wealth'
More than half of the UK's personal wealth is now tied up in property, according to a new report released today. Rising house prices mean that property now accounts for 55 per cent of the wealth held by Britons, the study commissioned by Prudential found. If the nation's wealth continues to shift away from traditional financial assets at current rates, then non-financial assets such as property could account for 60 per cent of overall personal wealth by 2009, the research concludes. According to the study, conducted by Datamonitor, 58 per cent of the UK's household wealth was comprised of traditional financial assets such as pension funds, shares and savings in 1996, when non-financial assets accounted for just 42 per cent of the nation's wealth. Prudential said that significant rises in house prices over the past 20 years was one of the reasons that property had replaced traditional financial assets as the nation's main source of financial wealth.
